The thesis focuses on analysis of Schopenhauer’s philosophy of music. Taking his metaphysics with its distincion of three levels of the world: will, ideas and phenomenal world as a starting point, the paper researches the place of music as an art. In addressing the parallel features of music and its characteristics with the three levels of the world the paper incorporates the theme of the performer as an important part in the musical process. This is done from the view of his metaphysical relation to the composer as well as the view concerning the role of human feelings in music and imagination of examples in contrast to music’s universality. In this way, the thesis combines two views of music: metaphysical and practical musical, both through the lense of performing.
