Present master's thesis highlights the basic functions of local media in local communities in which they operate, and their importance for members of local communities, whom they serve with their reporting. Theoretical premises, set on the basis of relevant scientific literature from the studied field, are supported by a case study of the local online television TV Kočevje.si. The research is based on two basic research methods, in-depth interviews with employees in the editorial board of the studied local online television and focus groups containing members of its local audience of different age generations. Main purposes of the research were to determine how well the content creators of the analyzed online television recognize theoretically defined functions of local media and the importance of their fulfillment by the local television they work for, and to find out how selected individuals from different age groups of local community, in which TV Kočevje.si operates, assess the success of the analyzed online media in fulfilling these functions and what importance they attach to their local television in local environment they live in. At the end, the findings of the research are compared to the broader context of local media in Slovenia, as it is a specific and still quite unexplored area, which is mostly financially malnourished and understaffed, and in which conditions are different than at any other level of the media world.
