This master's thesis examines the process of creating a short animated film. Since the
presented film is based on a story written by the author of this thesis, the theoretical part of
the thesis opens with a short chapter on the structure of stories. Next, this thesis describes all
the necessary steps for creating a short animated film in accordance with the general theory of
animated film and illustration. Artistic design is described first, including character
development, search for a style of artistic expression, and drawing or painting of
backgrounds. The theory, which accompanies the practical part of the thesis, touches upon the
storyboard and comes to life in the so-called animatic – storyboard with an added time
component. This thesis then presents and analyses selected works of other authors, who were
selected based on their practical work, as it seemed as an appropriate basis and example for
creating presented animation. Before the final part of this thesis, which examines montage and
adding of sound, one chapter focuses on how to bring characters to life or how to animate
them.
