The diploma thesis deals with the concept of nostalgia and collective memory in connection
with the contemporary alternative music scene in some countries of the former Republic of
Yugoslavia. The goal is to find out in which way and why Yugonostalgia, as a type of
nostalgia, influences the music creativity of the post-socialist generation. In the theoretical
part, I will discuss the concepts of nostalgia and collective memory and try to connect them
with Yugonostalgia as the central concept of the thesis. The next step is to describe
Yugonostalgia as a concept and its connection with socialism, the Republic of Yugoslavia,
and its alternative music scene. In the research part of the thesis, I will analyze the creative
material of selected musical ensembles or groups that come from the countries of former
Yugoslavia, more precisely from Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. At the same time, I will
explore the topics of retro aesthetics, as an important factor of today’s nostalgia. The main
finding of the thesis is that the two most important factors influencing Yugonostalgia are the
case of an incubation time and thus the objectification of events. Nostalgia for socialism and
the East acts as a strong resistance to the West and capitalism.
