This master’s thesis presents technical areas, that must be known by the designer
of electrical installations, who is responsible for the preparation of circuit diagrams for
the automation of technological equipment for projects with a possible risk of
explosion. Thus, the general field of automation considered by electrical engineering
is presented, which consists of a building automation system. The characteristics of
controllers and RIO units are highlighted, which are important for the selection of
devices used for designing diagrams. This thesis also focuses on the part of building
automation which includes peripheral devices, but mainly with the aim of
understanding the P&ID diagrams of technological processes which are crucial for the
designer of electrical installations, since they indicate all the signals for which a
connection to the controller or RIO unit must be provided. The work also presents the
ATEX directive, which the designer of electrical installations must take into account
when selecting equipment required for installation and operation in a potentially
explosive environment.
An example of an automation solution of a specific project is also presented, as
are the controllers and RIO units used in the implementation of the automation. An
analysis of the RIO units, which are suitable for installation and operation in a
potentially explosive environment is also presented, which helped in the selection of
the most suitable system.
