Introduction: Blepharoplasty or eyelid correction is a surgical procedure which improves the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. We distinguish between functional and aesthetic blepharoplasty. Functional blepharoplasty repairs droopy eyelids by removing excess tissue, which causes various functional problems to the patient, such as difficulty reading. Aesthetic blepharoplasty creates a youthful and more attractive appearance of the eyelids and face. These functional and aesthetic changes contribute to greater satisfaction and better patient well-being. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma thesis is to present surgical blepharoplasty by reviewing professional and scientific literature, as well as describing nursing care of patients before and after blepharoplasty. The aim of the thesis is to define the role of the nurse as regards the patient before and after surgery, with an emphasis on early identification of possible complications, informing the patient thereof and providing psychological support. Methods: The diploma thesis uses a descriptive method of work with a review of professional and scientific literature. The literature search was performed by using databases CINAHL, COBIB.SI, Medline, ScienceDirect and search engines PubMed and Google Scholar. The literature was collected between April and August 2021. Literature in English and Slovene is included, from 2009 to 2021, we gave priority to the recent literature. The literature search was performed with pre-defined keywords. Results: With pre-operative nursing care, the nurse takes care of the physical, psychological and administrative preparation of the patient for surgery. In the post-operative period, among other things the nurse performs eye and eyelid toilet, applies prescribed medicine, prevents and recognises complications and takes appropriate measures if and when they occur. Through her counselling and providing information, the nurse offers the patient psychological support and tries to empower them as much as possible for later recovery and self-care in their home environment. Discussion and conclusion: People are increasingly opting for surgical blepharoplasty due to positive aesthetic changes of the eyelids and a better psychological quality of life. Pre-operative anxiety is often present in patients, so it is necessary to prepare them comprehensively for surgery, to inform them well of the procedure and of the results of treatment they can expect in order to reduce the incidence of pre-operative anxiety, as well as possible patient dissatisfaction after surgery. Non-surgical blepharoplasty is becoming increasingly popular, but it is less effective than surgical blepharoplasty.
