Alzheimer disease is one of the most researched neurodegenerative diseases. It is a progressive neurological disorder that reduces the size of the brain and leads to the death of brain cells. Fluorescent probes are widely used in clinical trials and the diagnosis of Alzheimer disease. This thesis presents the synthesis of two naphthol derivatives, optical properties of which could be used to advantage in various fields of science. These are 6-acetyl-2-(dimethylamino)naphthalene and 1-{6-[(2-hydroxyethyl)(methyl)amino]-2-naphthyl}ethanone, both synthesized from 1-(6-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)ethanone.
