The paper deals with the history of the Slavs, mention of their names in historical sources and the meaning of Slavhood in literature, particularly at the time of individual European and national South Slav Romanticism in the first half of the 19th century. It takes as its examples two representative heroic poems: Krst pri Savici (The Baptism by the Savica) by the great Slovene poet France Prešeren and Gorski venec (The Mountain Wreath) by the Montenegrin, Serbian and Zugoslav prince-poet Petar II Petrović Njegoš, which are of fundamental importance to the artistic-literary description of national history abd the development of Slavic awarness among their Slovene and Montenegrin readers.
