Where some authors adhere to traditional linguostylistic writing style, others might decide to use newer, more creative approaches of verbalisation. Among Slovenian writers, Cankar is known for his systematic use of certain stylistic literary text features, such as phraseological renovations. The aim of this master’s thesis was therefore to determine whether Cankar’s sketches demonstrate a development of the phraseology use in the form of phraseological renovations. Based on the typology of phraseological renovations by E. Kržišnik, the empirical section illustrates phraseological renovations from Cankar’s first sketches (Vinjete, nezbrane vinjete) and phraseological renovations from his last collection of sketches Podobe iz sanj. Furthermore, these collections of literary works are compared based on the sketch's absolute and average length, the number of phraseological renovations, and the number of different arrays of these phraseological renovations. Lastly, this thesis concludes that the general use of phraseology in the form of phraseological renovations in Cankar’s sketches neither increases nor decreases but remains evenly represented throughout his literary career. The only discrepancies emerge in relation to the number of different arrays of phraseological renovations in both literary collections and are based on their length and the total number of the phraseological renovations.
