The master's thesis is based on a research which I conducted with nine social workers from nine Slovenian special institutions for the long-term stay of people with various barriers and social circumstances. In the analysis of the data obtained from the interviews, I discussed five content sets that represent the areas of work of social workers in institutions which are: specific tasks and responsibilities of social workers in institutions, methods of working with users, cooperation with user relatives, professional support, the impact of institutions on the users and the contribution of an individual institution to deinstitutionalization. The purpose of the master's thesis is to comprehensively present the work of a social worker in Slovenian social welfare institutions and center for training, work and care, highlight good practices and at the same time draw attention to possible defiencies or obstacles that arise in the work process of employees. I also make a couple of comparisons from other European countries. The results of the research showed that the overburdening of social workers with bureaucratic matters, insufficient number of employees, poor interrelations of employees and weak interconection of institutions and centers, insufficient state attention and lack of financial resources hinder wuality work of social workers and faster implementation of the deinstitutionalization process. In the last part of the thesis I list the suggestions of social workers to improve the quality of work and suggest my ideas for upgrading my master's thesis. In the last part I represent the impact of the COVID-19 situation on social workers, users and institutions.
