The paper looks at the origin and development of Slavic Studies at the Slavic Philology Department of the Ivan Franko Lviv University, reaching back to 1888. It presents the achievements of the department, its widening interests and the key research conducted by its staff. Special attention is paid to the expansion of Slavic languages, in particular Slovene, and the contribution of Ukrainian researchers to Slovene Studies. It describes the activities of Slovene language lecturers and provides information about events pertaining to Slovene culture and literature that take place in Lviv.
