The aim of the theis is to try to give a synthesis of settlement patterns, economy and social and cultural dynamics in the Middle and Upper Isonzo Valley and Upper Friuli between the foundation of Aquileia in 181 BC and the consolidation of Roman administration, communication networks and economy in the Early Principate. The text is divided into three parts. The first one is dedicated to the presentation of aims and methodology of the thesis, to the synthesis of ancient literary sources, of the history of archaeological studies and to trade networks and centuriation. In the second part we represent some of the sites. The last part is dedicated to the economy of the study area and to the flow of imports into settlements, to the cultural dynamics and to final remarks. The text is equiped with maps and lists of archaeological sites and typological lists of small finds.
