The Pomurska statistical region regularly ranks last among Slovenian regions in the analyses of the achieved level of sustainable development, despite its high-quality natural resources and various cultural potentials. Analyses that compare the level of sustainability do not examine the actual progress of municipalities, but only the conditions in a certain time period, therefore Pomurje is always presented as the most unsustainable region. In our research we evaluate the progress or regression of the municipalities of the Pomurska region considering the sustainable use of regional resources between 2012 and 2019. We combined the regional resources of Pomurje into environmental, social and economic types, designed a system of indicators for them and developed a method for evaluating their sustainable use. The results of the analyses show that the Pomurska statistical region partially made progress in the sustainable use of its regional resources. The region made progress in the sustainable use of social resources in the selected period, while it stagnated in the sustainable use of economic and environmental resources. There are differences in the progress of sustainable use between Pomurje municipalities, but they are not big – only the municipality of Dobrovnik stands out. Most of the municipalities that showed no improvement in the studied period are located in the hilly Goričko, while municipalities located in the Murska ravan plain show progress in the sustainable use of the regional resources.
