The article presents the forms and possibilities of professional development for teachers of Slovene as a foreign language at universities abroad. Recent years have seen an increase in awareness of the specialist skills and fields of knowledge which a teacher sent to a foreign university needs to perform a variety of tasks, including teaching the language, researching, organising cultural events and spreading awareness of Slovenia and its language.
