Nowadays, we cannot imagine modern educational process without information and communication technologies. It is the teacher who recognizes the use and the potential of the technology and who integrates it in the classrom according to the learning objectives. If the goal is a successful integration of ICT into the teaching and learning process, it is of great importance, that the teacher posseses aquiered knowledge of the field and that his attitudes towards the use of ICT are positive. Recent studies indicate that a succesful implementation of educational technologies depends on these attitudes and teachers orientation torwards the use of ICT which in consecuence determines how and when they will be used in a foreign language classroom.
The purpose of the master's thesis was to present the importance of ICT in education, teacher's role and his digital skills and attitude towards the use of ICT in the learning process, and due to few studies in the area of foreign languages and ICT examine the field of practice. The investigation was focused on teachers who teach English, German, Spanish, Italian or French language in educational institutions in Slovenia and on students who are enrolled in master programmes of foreign language studies at Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana. Our purpose was to identify which ICT tools are they familiar with, how do they perceive the use of ICT in language classrooms, how they evaluate their digital skills and, finally, how often they use it.
The results show that although teachers and students use ICT at least occasionally, and that they are familiar with most ICT tools and oppportunities that it offers, they do not explore their full didactic potential as it is seen in the frequency of its use in the classroom. The findings show that both groups have positive attitudes towards the implementaion of ICT in a foreign language classroom, but their assesment of their own e-competence lies between satisfactory and good, hence, the vast majority would like more training in the field of ICT in education.
