In my thesis, I am researching pen-palling over the web, focusing on romantic interactions. Firstly, I focus my attention on social changes, which happened in the last century, and with them, I try to explain how partnerships are perceived today. In connection to that, I am attentive to what reorganization of society has contributed to the realisation of self and how it is reflected in a person's actions and thoughts. I emphasize the importance of feelings, which are strongly present in love letters. My purpose is to see how the perception and writing of messages has changed since the exchanging of classic pen and paper letters until today's exchanges over the internet. The goal of this thesis is to find differences in interpretations of such messages, explore these differences, and to find out whether or not the messages themselves hold the same value as they did in the past, since the messages are being written in much larger numbers. Based on the new reality, which the internet offers, I am trying to figure out, if writing to someone today, involves the same sincerity of emotions and whether or not these emotions are still honestly expressed or not. In my thesis I offer a sketch of perception of relationships and searching for relationships on the internet, possible problems, and perception of emotions in today's society.
