Having a source of social support, even in the crucial current years, has been central to an individual’s quality of life. The forms of social support they offer to family, friends, as opposed to communities, co-workers and others, is an important factor in coping with the situation in good health. The thesis focuses on researching how the living environment (rural or urban) affects social support, precisely on its two dimensions, instrumental and the informational dimensions of social support, that participates recive in its social network. In my thesis, I define the rural and urban environment, which has been unclear in Slovenia for decades. For analysis I used data from European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) from 2012. We found that instrumental and informational support differ according to living environment, gender, and age. The family still remains the primary source of social support, regardless of its dimensions, in an individual’s life.
