Literature plays a major role in the history of the Slovenian nation. After the country declare its independence in 1991, Slovenian language, art, music and poetry constitute the Slovenian identity and unite the nation. Poets and novelists become very respected in the country. In 1896 in Vienna, Cankar and Župančič get it touch with new literary trends and ideas, already very widespread throughout Europe, and transfer them into Slovenian literature. The dissertation deals with the reception of Slovenian neo-romantic authors in the French cultural space, focusing mainly on the works of Ivan Cankar and Oton Župančič that have been translated into French, their initiatives in art and publicity and the theatrical performances of their plays in French theatres.
