The research of journalistic texts from the viewpoint of linguistic stylistics and genres in Slovenia has its origins in the 1970s. The research gap exists in the specific field of historical genre development. While news reporting texts in the first Slovene daily newspapers were researched from the stylistic viewpoint, such analysis does not exist for evaluative texts. This master’s thesis focuses on the historical development of one of the evaluative texts, the commentary. Based on the stylistic and genre analysis of the first two Slovene daily newspapers Slovenski narod and Slovenec, the thesis tries to analyse the characteristics of the commentary and the course of its development. The principal elements of the genre are the interpretive and evaluational aspect, a complex subject, the absence of the general information on the subject, actualisms, argumentation of the opinion and the author’s signature. The research focuses on the development of each of these elements through time. Although the exact period when the commentary developed from its first foundations to an autonomous genre cannot be determined, it can be argued that texts regarded as commentaries regularly appeared in the first Slovene daily newspapers. These texts possessed stylistic and genre characteristics of the early and the contemporary commentary.
