Abstract
The gap between male and female participation incomputer science education and careers is a worldwide issue thatmust be addressed by introducing early methodological learninginterventions that make computerscience attractive to all, thatis by answering the following issues: a) misperception amongeducators, learners, parents and youngsters on the suitability ofcomputer science careers to girls and b) a wrong assumptionof an insufficient preparedness to do it successfully. This articlepresents a European initiative - CODING4GIRLS - that proposesto teach coding through a game design and development processbased on a design thinking methodological approach that is linkedto creativity and human-centered solutions. In this methodology, students address increasingly complex real-life challenges bydesigning and developing awareness raising serious games forwhich they need to learn specific coding concepts.
