Through comparison of two of the most important architectural works of 20th century, and of
both architects and their principles of planing architecture I tried to show a development of
modern architecture and guess why only one way of their thinking remained in practise during
rest of the century. Adolf Loos and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe both played an important role
introducing new ideas to architectural planing. Loos with his idea of Raumplan and harsh
judgement of ornament, Mies with his contribution to planing in a way of plan libre and
popularization of International Style, which foremost used plan libre. Loos' Villa Müller and
Mies' Farnsworth House are both one of the finest examples of both principles and at the same
time are two of the best examples of mentioned architects' housing architecture. Both architects
came form similar backgrounds, but Mies immediately started with practical approach to
architecture, while Loos firstly became famous as a theorist. Both houses were private
commissions, Loos' as a family house and Mies' as a place of personal detatchment. Both are
in different ways marked by functionalist ideas, which are fairly new in Loos' case, but with
Mies they have already reached clear modern forms and ideas. Both houses influenced
architecture of younger generations, Loos' mostly in terms of ideas, and on the other hand Mies
directly influenced following arhitecutral production.
