Fashion photography is a type of photography, that usually displays fashion, social trends, social habits and preferences of different generations. At first, fashion photographers imitated the works of portrait painters, but it was not until the early 20th century, that it established itself as an independent genre. Today it is considered an art. As one of the most influential fashion photographers, Helmut Newton has photographed black and white provocative and surprising photographs, that have been featured in numerous fashion magazines and catalogs. In addition to fashion photography, he also photographed nudes and portraits, but only a few of his works can be ascribed specifically to one genre. He preferred to stage women outside of the studio and used natural or given light and very simple equipment.
The purpose of the thesis was to create a series of black and white fashion photographs in the style of Helmut Newton. Research into the theory of fashion photography, Helmut Newton’s style and work, the analysis of interviews with his former assistants and the analysis of his photographs, helped us in creating the concept design and prepared us for our shooting. For the shoot we used a Nikon D7200 camera. In order to make photographs resemble Newton's style even more, we later edited them appropriately with the help of the Adobe Lightroom software with the addition of Nik Collections and Adobe Photoshop. After the analysis of the resulting photographs, we described the technical properties of the photographs and did an artistic analysis. To create the final series of photographs, we followed the guidelines obtained through theoretical and research work without intending to copy Newton’s work.
