The purpose of this master's thesis is to explore the relationship between the subject, the destination country, and the object, the refugees, as depicted in contemporary Austrian literature. The research produces several questions such as in what degree do the citizens of the European Union dictate the identity of outsiders, how do refugees see the destination countries, in what way does the media influence the subject-object interaction and how does this reflect in German literature. The paper is divided into two parts, the first part tries to explain the theoretical nature of the subject-object problem, whereas the second part deals with an analysis of two texts – Viktor hilft and Wenn der Jasmin auswandert. In the autobiographical tale about fleeing from war and in the novel which explores the transitory integrational stage as consequence of the so called refugee crisis I try to find concrete examples of exclusion of the object by the subject and examples that illustrate the importance of the media for refugees and for citizens of the European Union.
