The role of mothers in India is closely connected to representation of motherhood in Bollywood movies. This paper enlightens the issue of their role through the eyes of Indian mother and through the picture that Bollywood movies show. With the analysis of Bollywood movies, whose plot revolves around mothers and with the analysis of interviews with Indian mothers, I researched the connection. My findings indicate that such movies show the social ideal of mothers, that is patriarchally submissive and reduced to motherhood only. For Indian mothers the movies also show the ideal mother, but they disagree on the fact that they are shown with only that identity. They recognize the lack of strong, independent female characters, which show mothers as women too. Lack of such characterization of mothers could appeal to the Bollywood industry to create such movies, that Indian mothers need. Those would contribute to the end of representing mothers as goddesses and portraying them as more then just mothers.
