The role of the father is like the mother’s role very crucial in the child's development. The role is also complementary as both parents contribute equally to the child's development. Its lack in physical or mental form contributes to the child's self-doubt and insecurity.
The theoretical part presents the family, its role and significance. The role of the mother and father, the historical discourse of fatherhood, the authority of the father, the emergence of new fatherhood, and the absence of the father are presented below.
The empirical part contains qualitative research of six semi-structured interviews which were conducted with fathers of different ages.
The purpose of bachelor's thesis is to introduce the father’s role in the family through the history, with the emphasis on the father’s role in the family nowadays. We are interested in the opinions of fathers of different ages on parenthood. The main interest is to get their opinion of the role of father and mother and how the role of both changed over time. The goals of bachelor's thesis are to find out how the fatherhood has been developing through time, how the role of the mother differs from the role of the father, why it comes to differences between those two roles and what the future of fatherhood is.
The results of the research showed that the awareness and mentality about the upbringing has changed. The selected sample shows evidence and differences in the role of the father in the family, who is nowadays increasingly involved in the care and upbringing of children. There is a visible awareness of communication importance and accepting compromises for the benefit of the relationship between partners and the children.
