In the first part of the thesis we present a brief overview of the development of migrations in Slovenia and France and we describe some basic data on the migrant situation in both countries today. This helps us understand the position of French and Slovene language in the higher education system of both countries. We also present “Dispositif Réfugiés” the Refugee Program of the University of Burgundy.
In the theoretical part, we explain didactic methods for teaching higher levels of language to adult migrants and refugees. We present in more detail, the specific characteristics of refugee learners and learning groups. We focus primarily on interculturalism, heterogeneity of learning groups, and the challenges encountered when teaching higher levels of language to adult refugees.
In the empirical part we present the results of the research conducted with the participants of the Refugee Program of the University of Burgundy. The aim of the thesis is to better comprehend the higher linguistic needs, that enable migrants, and especially refugees, to continue their education or gain employment in the host country. We were interested to see what kind of impact the participation in such a program will have on refugees’ integration.
The results of the research showed us that participation in this program has an extremely positive impact on refugees. Not only in their progression in foreign language, which is certainly the goal of any language teaching, but also in their inclusion in educational programs and successful employment. This in turn leads to better integration into their new society. Finally, the findings of the empirical work are translated into the Slovenian context.
