This master’s thesis presents the aspect in Slovenian and its perception, teaching and learning in
the case of Francophone speakers of Slovenian as a foreign language. It is built on the assumption
that this grammatical chapter is often overlooked or insufficiently presented due to its difficulty,
which frequently causes problems with the formation and the understanding of the aspect to
Francophone speakers. The thesis presents the aspect in a wider context, its discussion in
international aspect studies and aspect in the universal grammar. In the continuation it presents
the aspect in Slovenian in more detail, its discussion in the Slovenian linguistics, different
approaches and the corresponding terminology (from the first descriptions of Slovenian
grammarians and theories of the performative utterance to contrastive approaches and diachronic
study in comparison to the Proto-Slavic language). In the theoretical part the pragmatic
perspective of aspect use is also presented: cases in which we use perfective and imperfective
verbs and sequence as a criteria for the perfective aspect. A question that arises here is how to
present the use and the formation of the aspect in Slovenian to the Francophone speakers of
Slovenian as a foreign language. A Dictionary of Technical Terms with French and Slovenian
expressions that are used in teaching and learning the Slovenian aspect by teachers and learners is
added to the chapter. For a greater awareness of problems with the aspect for Francophone
speakers of Slovenian as a foreign language the expression of value of the Slovenian aspect in
French is also presented. The empirical part consists of the presentation of aspect in two manuals
of Slovenian as a foreign language that are dedicated exclusively to the French speaking
audience: Découvrir et pratiquer le slovène and Parlons slovène. In the second part of the
empirical part we present a test solved by thirteen Francophone speakers of Slovenian as a
foreign language On the basis of the analysis of the tests’ results a few suggestions of the
exercises for learning and practicing the aspect are added.
