Methods: For this diploma thesis a descriptive method was used. The domestic and foreign professional and scientific literature was reviewed. Review and original scientific articles, conferences and symposiums were included. Literature published from 2008 to 2018 was used. Results: The nurse, as a carrier of health continuous education, plays an important role in identifying and defining insomnia in patients with chronic non-communicable diseases. For this he or she has available different approaches (conversation, questionnaires, etc.). Also important is its role in educating sleep hygiene and motivating patients to adopt and implement new sleeping habits. The nurse encourages the use of non-pharmacological approaches and monitors if insomnia improves. Discussion and conclusion: Nurses need to have enough knowledge and skills to be able to successfully help patients who are insomniac. The role of nurses in identifying and successfully treating insomnia in patients with chronic non-communicable diseases needs to be further defined and provided with appropriate education and skills acquisition. Research on nursing interventions in patients who are insomniac is modest. Due to the growing number of patients with chronic non-communicable diseases, this area needs to be strengthened in terms of research and educational process.
