Abstract

Title:Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks and Future Optical Access Technologies
Abstract:
The thesis addresses activation process of a gigabit-capable passive optical access network (GPON) in the Eastern Slovenia. Topology and operation principles of the said technology are presented as well. A new standard, called a next-generation passive optical network stage 2 (NG-PON2), which is scheduled to replace GPON in the future is also briefly described. Work methods for the activation of GPON were numerous and various, as this task demanded the use of many electrotechnical and information and communications technology (ICT) skills. The activation process of GPON was planned in advance and was performed systematically. Firstly, modifications of local exchange office were needed in order to implement the GPON technology. The installation of infrastructure came next which also included the additional devices that were added for the successful operation of the network. After that, optical fiber was connected and system configuration was performed. Additionally, all devices were registered in the archive and remote access was made possible. The result was completely functional optical access network which provides triple play service to its users. Those services include IPTV, broadband internet access and fixed telephony. Optical access networks are significantly better than their copper counterparts, as they are easily expandable and offer larger bandwidths. They are also less susceptible to interference and offer easier implementations of new technologies.
