The master thesis studies the impact of the visitation programmes and site management participation in Škocjanski zatok N.R. on encouraging responsible behavior towards nature. Quantitative (direct observation method, questionnaires and word association test) as well as qualitative research methods (focus group and semi-structured interviews and participant observation method) were used. The majority of the reserve visitors are locals with above-average education, who visit the reserve for recreation, beautiful nature, peace and observation of birds, other animals and plants. The tested visitation and site management activities with higher participation levels and direct nature experience had a more profound impact on positive behavioral changes. Increased connectedness with the reserve conservation goals upon participation in visitor programs was also confirmed. Significant life experiences - direct childhood nature experience supported by adult and peer role models - proved to have a very positive impact on their recent attitude and fondness of nature. The children's conceptions about Škocjanski zatok are predominantly developed with regard to animal and plant species, particularly birds and other animals. For children below the ages of 11 or 12, the nature reserve is an area of nature experience where they can create emotional bonds with nature. Learning about more complex and abstract biological and nature conservation concepts is suitable for the youth above the age of 12.
