Bancassurance is the result of cooperation between banks and insurance companies for the purpose of achieving higher profits. In Slovenia, the bancassurance industry has developed primarily in the last decade, although its tradition is much longer.
Theoretical part of the thesis sums up the concept of bancassurance, its history, legislation, strengths and weaknesses as well as types of cooperation between banks and insurance companies. A descriptive approach is used to define the terminology and the compilation method is used to summarize findings of key authors.
Empirical part of the thesis focuses on presenting the range and occurrence of bancassurance services sales and compares the data relevant for selected countries. Description method is used to display individual data sets and comparative method is used to analyse, compare and contrast country specific data sets. Similar methods are used to summarize and analyse currently available offers in selected banks.
Challenges in researching this topic have to do with lack of available and current research as well as relative novelty and yet unexamined potential of bancassurance in Slovenia. Its prevalence does not yet reach the average in other European countries. Potential for development of bancassurance in Slovenia is summarized: we estimate that the possibility for the development is exceptional, but that traditional presence of insurance agents and intermediaries makes it difficult for banks to compete, which would require a change of customer mindset and tailoring offers to needs of clients.
