Abstract

Title:
Workaholism and meaning of life in middle adulthood
Abstract:
My goal for my master's thesis was exploring the relationship between workaholism and meaning of life in middle adulthood. Because middle adulthood is often characterized by a need for generativity, which can be fulfilled through work, I decided to also focus on the role meaning of work plays in mediating the relationship mentioned above. My study shows that both enthusiastic and nonenthusiastic workaholics report living a less meaningful life. Contrary to my expectations nonworkaholics reported the same level of meaning in life as workaholics. Meaning of work was a bit higher for workaholics in comparison with nonworkaholics. Meaning of life was shown to positively correlate with enjoyment of work and excessive time investment in work, whereas it has no correlation with feeling inner pressures for work. It was also shown that meaning of work does not moderate relationship between meaning of life and workaholism. My findings show that work must be done in finding new ways to help people view work as a source of meaning, beacuse neither workaholics or nonworkaholics view work as an important source of personal growth and meaning. At the same time these findings remind us that we need to strive for greater work-life balance, because that enables people to find meaning in other activites outside work.
