Abstract

Title:Being a biological child in foster home
Abstract:
In my master's degree thesis I was researching the role of biological children in foster families. The role of biological children in often overlooked or even neglected, since all the attention is directed towards foster children, who usually need more help. But this is not reason enough for overlooking and leaving out biological children from entire process. In my dissertation I have researched how biological children are being prepaired for foster children's arrival and who preapires them, are there any changes in the family since the new member has arrived and if there are, what kind. I was also researching the decision- making area, are the biological children invited into making decisions about foster care and is their opinion heard and accepted. At the end I wanted to know more about the role of social worker or social services in general. What is their role or importance, are social workers spending time with biological children and if child voice is allowed. In the theoretical part I defined social work and desribed its development. Later on I wrote about social work's basis- methodic principles, systemic moral and ways of practice. After that I paid attention to social work with family, where I defined family and working on two levels, which is a must for a work well done. At the end I focused on changes in the family, namely position and role of child, changes in work- sharing, comunicating and hierarcy, and about alliance between parents whitch is crucial in fostering. I ended with a chapter about cooperation between social services and family and about respecting childhood and voice of a child. In the empirical part of the thesis I have interviewed 6 biological children from foster families. I qualitatively analysed and coded the interviews. On the base of the data I collected I was able to present my results and came to a specific conclusions. I have concluded, that biological children are rarely prepaired for the arival of foster children and when they are it is just with basic information. I think that the way child is prepaired and the amount of information he has affects the amount of his role in deciding aboz foster care. The research showed that with the arrival of foster care many changes are related, such as way of communicating, hierarchy and work and time arrangement. The last conclusion I came to was that social workers are not devoting enough time to biological children and are not inviting them to participate and tell their opinions.
