Reality television is one of the major phenomena that has influenced the development of the media and especially the television industry. With the rise in the early 1990s, reality television marked the television genre and set new directions. These are shows that are based on "reality" respectively showing true events of ordinary people. Due to mixing of codes of different genres, types of reality shows and formats have also evolved over time, with its distinctive features. In this paper, I will focus on two sub-genres, namely makeover shows and gamedocs.
First, I will present the theoretical framework of reality television and then compare and analyze two thematically different formats of reality shows broadcast on Slovenian television. In spite of seemingly large differences, both farming and weight loss are close to the Slovenian audience. I will find out what are the genre differences, similarities and where are the touch points of The Biggest Loser Slovenija and Kmetija: Nov začetek. I will also be interested in the role of adaptation and the cultural aspect of both formats, which significantly influence the success of the show.
