There are increasing economic differences in the world. The middle layer slowly disappears and there remains poor and rich. Poverty is a growing problem for which there is no complete remedy so far, and each country is struggling with this problem in its own way. Social security systems need to be regularly updated in order to cope with rapidly changing living conditions. The purpose of the master's thesis is to explore and present one of the alternatives to the social systems of today. Not so much the new idea of universal basic income has become topical again at the time of the financial crisis. In the world, many pilot projects were implemented or implementing, and are more or less similar to the original universal basic income. The objectives of the master's thesis are to present the definition, concept and variations of universal basic income. Then to introduce pilot projects to the world and say something in each. Similar projects that may be an alternative to universal basic income will also be presented. From the results of the survey, it will be possible to see how much support is given to the idea of introducing universal basic income in Slovenia, and what do the people of Slovenia in general think about this idea. Finally, there is an analysis of the data for the case of Slovenia, which seeks to show whether Slovenia could introduce a universal basic income and how much funding it would require. The results of the research could be expanded and applied for more detailed analyzes for introducing some subtype of UBI (eg, temporary or segmented), or for the researches on improving the existing social system.
