On 27th of June in 1991, after declaring independence and autonomy, the Ten-Day War began in the Republic of Slovenia. But for the members of militsiya the war preparation commenced even before, in 1989 with the announcement of the rallies for truth in Ljubljana. Therefore, the members of militsiya were already preparing for two years for the armed conflict with JLA. JLA was planning to occupy all the boarding crossings and the airport of Brnik that would result in isolation of the new country from the rest of the world. The members of militsiya were prepared for the war due to their fully mobilised units even before the declaration of the independence. That enabled the militsiya to wait out readily for the war. The militsiya was given some hard task to do because they were the most qualified and armed structure available which was the reason the political leadership of the time counted substantially on them. The militsiya therefore helped to defend the country alongside its regular tasks. They also helped the Territorial Army with leading of the operations where occasionally the militsiya run said operations by itself while they were maintaining law and order at the same time. In my thesis I will focus on militia’s war preparation, its structure, role during and after the war and its road to becoming the authority of democracy.
