This diploma thesis tackles the life of Josip Broz Tito in relates the cult of his personality as a Yugoslav example of this phenomenon. The analysis is based on both historical and sociological perspective on the subject. The interdisciplinary study gives an objective view and explanation of the phenomenon through two perspectives. It highlights certain parts od Tito's life and myths that developed around him. The diploma thesis also introduces socialism, the social order during his time, and the management policies along with propaganda. In the central part of the thesis the theory of the cult of personality is introduced in relation to the mythology around Tito. Nostalgia after Tito's death, called »Titonostalgia«, is also presented and described. The conclusion summarizes the findings on the possibilities for the development of the cult of personality today, in democratic societies, regarding to the components of Tito's example, and on the question if dictatorship is a necessary condition for its formation.
