This work discusses religion in the novel Visoška kronika by the Slovene novelist Ivan Tavčar. Being one of the most read Slovene novels, it is set in 17th century and among other subjects thematizes Catholicism, Protestantism and witchcraft. Aided with an analysis of religion in Visoška kronika, a review of other Tavčar’s works that thematize religion, research of crucial events from Slovene politics at the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century and the author’s political career, I find that religion is not the central theme of Visoška kronika, but it is very important to the overall story of the novel and the fate of all main characters. The author’s personal beliefs strongly influenced his work, especially his political views that were at the time closely associated with religion.
