Abstract

Title:THE CAUSES OF THE RADICALIZATION OF ISLAM IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
Abstract:
This work deals with the causes of the radicalization of Islam in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which today is a multiethnic and multireligious state. Between 1992 and 1995 BiH faced one of the bloodiest wars in Europe after the Second World War. Moreover, BiH is still less developed economically than neighboring countries which creates friction between different ethnic groups. The purpose of this work is primarily to present and describe Islam in BiH and the events in the Islamic community in the territory of BiH, as well as to find the causes for possible phenomena of extremism in the bad economic and political state of the country after the war. While writing the diploma work, researching and obtaining data, it can be concluded that indeed the extreme branches of Islam in BiH are present, but are currently limited to marginalized groups and individuals. Also, there is a small group of Wahhabists and some former members of mujahideen in the country, known for their extreme beliefs. Due to poor economic conditions, there is an additional danger that extremism in BiH will spread because of the recent disintegration of the Islamic state in Syria and Iraq. Hundreds of citizens of BiH have been fighting for the Islamic state and will probably return home after its disintegration. Their contribution to future extremism in BiH is therefore impossible to predict.
