The diploma work will address the subject of the verb construction in German. Verb
constructions are more complicated in linguistics, which means that the meaning (semantic
content) is largely transferred from the verb to the noun. In doing so, the verb acts only as a
functional verb: although it has all the characteristics (person, number, time), it has no more
word meaning. The meaning no longer carries the predicate, but the accusative object or the
prepositional group. Therefore, it is possible to exchange the function verb for an
etymologically related full verb.
I will focus only on the part of the characteristic that feature the phrases in German - in the way
that an event unfolds, described by the verb in a vocabulary (action, course, mode of operation).
It is sometimes difficult to achieve clear boundaries, which will be seen in concrete cases. The
safest way to identify these properties are verbs that are related to the morphological parts of
words (prefix).
In specific cases where I will determine these characteristic, I will search for some examples
from secondary literature, and I will take some examples from the list of the most common
functional verbs. I will use these examples to find relevant examples of phrases in the language
manuals. I am interested in how often phrases in the texts in German newspapers and books are
frequent, but above all, the key question is, if I can also determine the characteristics described
above by phrases and the question where the boundaries are between word construction and
phrases.
