Abstract

Title:Expressing adversative relations in the EPTIC-SI interpreting subcorpora
Abstract:
The master's thesis deals with the expression of adversative relations in interpreting from English into Slovene; the use of two English adversative connectors, but and yet, in the EPTIC-SI interpreting subcorpus is analysed. The theoretical part presents the definitions of simultaneous interpreting, interpreting studies, interpreting strategies and a detailed description of different types of corpora, their development in time, corpus linguistics in connection with interpreting, corpus typology and also a detailed description of EPTIC-SI, an intermodal corpus, which is used in the analysis. The final section of the theoretical part deals with the use of a corpus-based approach in the analysis of connectors, and with the definition of English and Slovene adversative connectors. The empirical part presents the results of the analysis, which is divided into quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. In the former, all the occurrences of the two connectors and their translation equivalents are presented, in the latter, the Slovene translation equivalents are discussed in more detail.
