This master's thesis is dealing with the topic of a male lover in a contemporary novel. First, there is a short introduction of how love has been presented over time, and identification of the main features of the contemporary Slovene novel and the theme of love within it. In the analytical part, there is a comparative analysis of the theme of infatuation and love, on the level of a story and a narrative, in three Slovene novels (Lojze Kovačič: Prišleki, Maruša Krese: Da me je strah?, Florjan Lipuš: Srčne pege) and in three foreign ones (Antoni Libera: Madame, Wilhelm Genazino: Die Liebesblödigkeit, Christian Gailly: An Evening at the Club).
In three of those novels, the most essential determinant in a relationship is infatuation or love towards a woman. This is very important (Madame, An Evening at the Club) or even the most important value (Srčne pege) because it represents the greatest happiness in life. In Da me je strah? the relationship is defined by a system that hinders personal happiness. In Die Liebesblödigkeit the relationships are mostly marked by short-term insecurities, habits and self-interest, whereas, in Prišleki, relationships with women are defined by sex. In two of the novels (Prišleki, Madame), a combination of narration and essayisation is extremely important. Da me je strah? is characterized by a short and truncate syntax, with speech having a highly significant function. In Die Liebesblödigkeit, the author often uses irony, whereas in Srčne pege lyricism the most prominent feature and the author uses a semantically charged language in a concise manner. An Evening at the Club is greatly marked by the (apparent) impartiality and parody.
