In my diploma paper I put an emphasis on the theme of employing disabled people, focusing specifically on the employment opportunities in a chosen municipality, namely the municipality of Nova Gorica. Disabled people are protected by a number of laws, where they are described as equal to others and where their employment is encouraged, as they are one of the most vulnerable groups on the labour market. However, the gap between theory or rather legislation and practice can sometimes be very big. Despite numerous actions and encouragements, unemployment among disabled people still remains a big issue on the national as well as local level. In the theoretical part I described some disability definitions, explained the position of disabled people on the labour market and presented some statistic data about employed and unemployed disabled people, which I later compared with other employed and unemployed people in Slovenia. I presented the employment opportunities for disabled people, as they are defined by the Law on Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment of Persons with Disabilities and the quota system. In the empirical part I presented employment opportunities for disabled people in the municipality of Nova Gorica. I wanted to find out what the Employment Service of Slovenia believes are the employers’ reasons for hiring disabled people. I acquired the wanted information with the use of various approaches; specifically the use of a survey questionnaire among eleven employers or rather companies and public institutions that employ disabled people in the municipality of Nova Gorica, and by interviewing the Nova Gorica Regional office of the Employment Service of Slovenia.
