The theoretical part of the master thesis presents the cultural heritage of Cerklje na Gorenjskem gathered from the existing history books and articles. Archaeological excavations taking place in 2006 proved the existence of the Roman civilisation in these parts, which is nowadays seen in the museum nearby. The settlement, which was built throughout the centuries, has now become a small urban centre on the outskirts of the Ljubljana Basin. There are a memorial park, the local church and fountain built by Jože Plečnik, Hribar’s summer residence and almost a 400 – year - old linden tree with the plague statue underneath, all deserving honourable mentions. The local cultural heritage is also presented through the eyes of local historians and other renowned residents who lived and worked in the village in that time period.
In the empirical part of the master thesis there is a 3 – hour lesson plan on local history facts that was carried out on the field with five –grade students of the local Primary school. Students were able to get to learn about their own cultural heritage through working with different historical sources and through active ways of learning. The fieldwork and the learning process were evaluated and presented by an in-depth interview of the students’ impressions, ideas and their findings.
With this master thesis a new piece has been added to the local History mosaic. Furthermore, there has been a better understanding of the local cultural heritage amongst the students of the local Primary school.
