The present master's thesis concerns the syntax of compound sentences in the Slovenian language. It has been based on an observation pertaining to Slavic languages in general and valid for almost a century, i.e. that it is more suitable to speak of various degrees of dependence, rather than of coordination-subordination pairs exclusively. Based on that, we have constructed a typology of dependent clauses and adjusted it to the rules of Slovenian syntax. Dependent clauses are thus divided into three categories: valency-dependent clauses (subcategorized into relative clauses and content subordinate clauses), collocational dependent clauses and subordinate complementary elements. Both valency-dependent and collocational dependent clauses have been described extensively in linguistics, while subordinate complementary elements have only been mentioned briefly. The typology obtained focusses on presenting as many meanings and conjunctive words as possible.
