The first part of the graduation thesis describes a relatively new material. In the future steel
reinforcement in concrete structures is supposed to be substituted by basalt reinforced rebars. They
have higher corosion resistance than steel reinforcement. Additionally, basalt rebars are extremely
light in weight with high tensile strength. However, modulus of elasticity is extremely low, which can
be a problem in view of construction design. Due to lower modulus of elasticity stiffness is reduced.
Higher deformations and wider cracks are formed.
Eurocode standards do not provide guidelines for designing a basalt reinforced concrete beam. In the
second part, the existing American guidelines for the design of structural concrete with fiber
reinforced polymer bars are presented. There is also an example of designing a basalt reinforced
concrete beam.
