In cooperation with the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia – Regional office Kranj, we carried out a study of wooden structures in a house in Kropa, which they were renovating in 2016. The building has been renovated and built onto several times over the recent past centuries, while the floor plan has remained unchanged. Therefore we wanted to carry out the identification and dendrochronological analysis of the wood. We took 18 samples of wood from the floor and wall structures in the first and in the second floor. Identification of the wood revealed that the structures were made of silver fir (Abies alba) and Norway spruce (Picea abies). Wood identification analyses showed that the wood in the first floor is predominantly silver fir (78 % of the samples). In general, the wood had only a few annual rings, but we did discover one element with the outermost annual ring from the year 1628, which must be considered as terminus post quem. The wood in the second floor is predominantly Norway spruce (70 % of samples). The dating of the outermost annual rings indicates that the wooden construction was constructed after the year 1885. This project represents the first systematic survey (identification and dendrochronological analysis) of wood in the building in Kropa and offers a starting point for a more detailed reconstruction of construction phases, taking into account other available historical sources.
