In this master thesis I investigated the legislation in the field of safety and health at work
by Member States of the European Union. There is growing emphasis on health and
safety at work. Due to the development of society under the influence of new
technologies and variable economic and social situation is also our jobs, working practices
and production processes are constantly changing. New working conditions give rise to
new emerging risks and challenges requiring political, administrative and technical
measures to ensure a high level of safety and health at work.
Safety and health at work is a multidisciplinary field that deals with the provision of safety
and health and welfare of people at work. Increasingly complex work processes and
changable working conditions, together with new or changing types of threats require a
new systematic approach to safety and health at work.
Another important document that governs the area of health and safety at work is
Directive 89/391/EEC. Legislation of the European Union and its individual directive shall
provide a basis which allows a high level of safety and health at workplaces in Europe.
Implementation of the provisions of the dividual countries vary, their practical application
is dependent on economic activity, employee category and size of the company or
business unit.
