Human is a very curious creature. He reads because of enjoyment and freedom and he obtains new knowledge and skills. Everything starts in the childhood. The reading experience in the preschool age is very important. A child gets his first reading experience within the family, from his parents and later in the kindergarten. Every reading experience helps for child`s literacy. The kindergarten is an important factor in promoting family reading. On the other side, parents are an important and useful factor in improving child`s literacy. As a consequence, the partnership between the kindergarten and parents is very important.
The diploma thesis with the title Kindergarten and parents’ partnership – the quality indicator of family reading is consisted of theoretical and empirical part. In theoretical part I have defined terms: reading and reading literacy, child`s reading development, literacy and beginner`s literacy, family reading, family literacy and reading motivation, kindergarten and parents partnership and its quality.
In the empirical part I conducted the research of family reading and the importance of reading for kindergarten teachers and parents. 50 kindergarten teachers and 50 parents of preschool children cooperated in the research.
The research has shown that the most kindergarten teachers and parents are aware of the importance of reading, especially the importance of family reading and the partnership between kindergarten teachers and parents. The majority of parents are reading to their children on a daily basis. They are reading different types of literature, but most of all, they are reading picture books. Kindergarten teachers recognize the influence of family reading at literacy activities. They observe a different attitude towards books, a richer vocabulary, a greater interest for activities and longer concentration. Kindergarten teachers encourage parents for family reading. Additionally, parents encourage their children to participate in programs such as reading badge, reading backpack etc.
