Introduction: The process of medical treatment of a patient with a mental disorder is a complex healthcare problem. For this reason, a holistic and continuous treatment of the patient, when it is returned from a hospital to the home environment is of key importance. It is necessary to emphasize the importance of informing the competent services, when the patient returns from the hospital environment to the home environment. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma work is to present a continuous and comprehensive treatment of the patient with a mental disorder after the discharge from the hospital, through a review of professional and scientific literature. Methods of work: In the diploma the descriptive method of work was used, which examined the literature published since 2007, and two older sources were used. In order to define the purpose of the diploma thesis, it was examined by a professional in the scientific literature in the field of nursing, which deals with the discharge of a patient from a psychiatric hospital. Literature was sought with the help of remote access to the information resources of the libraries of the University of Ljubljana through the portal DiKUL and the databases: CINAHL in MEDLINE. The selected literature is in English in the Slovene language, and all texts were fully accessible in their entirety. Results: The results, obtained with a literature review, show, that in Slovenia the patient's discharge from a hospital is subsystem, there are no experts in the field of nursing care who can solve the problems. Community care is already being implemented, and non-governmental organizations also has a role. Discussion and conclusion: The treatment of mental health disorders is a lengthy process. For this reason, long-term and system solutions should be sought. One of them is to systematically inform the competent services and actively cooperate with each stakeholder in the aid system that is available to a patient with a mental illness after being discharged from the hospital.
